Day 1: Exploring the Local Market Scene

To kick off our trip, we spent the day exploring the local market scene. We had no shortage of choices, and it was amazing to be able to take in all the sights, smells, and sounds of the area.

  • First, we stopped at an outdoor market. The weather was perfect, and everything smelled fresh, with vendors offering up delicious food and handmade items. We tried various dishes, including the local specialty of fried eggs and cheese on a hot flatbread. It was an amazing experience wandering through the maze of tents and trying new things.
  • Next, we checked out the local flea market. Here, we found everything from furniture to housewares, and souvenirs. We even found an antique tapestry that was perfect for our living room. We spent hours browsing through the aisles and chatting with the vendors.

Finally, we stopped at a farmers’ market for some produce and fresh-baked goods. We chatted with the vendors about their products and sampled some goodies along the way. We found some amazing Italian tomatoes and even picked up some of the local honey for our tea.

Overall, it was a great day spent exploring the local market scene. We left with plenty of memories and goodies to take home with us.

Day 2: Savoring Street Food Specialties

Now that you are finally ready to explore the wondrous savours of the local street food, today is the day! Living up to its hype, the street food won’t disappoint. To begin, check out the following
must-visit spots:

  • The Egg Shack: This family-run Egg Shack serves up energy-filled dishes from omelets to poached eggs, and don’t even get us started on their signature egg paratha!
  • The Cake Show: Don’t worry, it’s not what you think. Get your hands on some of the most sumptuous cake sandwiches at this long-time favourite.
  • Shuk Road: If you’re more of a soup person, try the noodle soup from Shuk Road. Bursting with flavour and brightly coloured vegetables, it’s hard to resist.

Aside from the big names, don’t forget to explore the lesser-known stalls as well! By venturing through smaller neighborhoods, you’ll be able to find hidden gems that deliver on no less than quality.

Trust us, it will be an experience to remember. One can get quite overwhelmed by the sheer variety of dishes – just pick up something that looks good and dive right in. As the locals say: it’s not the food that makes your day, it’s the way you eat it!

Day 3: Taking a Food Tour Through History

Exploring by Palate: Today on the food tour, we explored the city through its food culture. Seeking out foods and dishes that the locals know and love, we get to explore the culture and values of the city from a different angle. We tasted plates from different hotels and authentic restaurants–each one with its own unique story.

  • We started the day with a local breakfast: an omelette with peppers, onions, and a generous crumble of feta cheese.
  • At lunchtime, we enjoyed a traditional tabbouleh salad- diced tomatoes, cucumbers, and an abundance of fresh parsley.
  • Then for a sweet treat, we sampled a traditional baklava: layers of flaky filo pastry filled with chopped nuts.

As we made our way through the city, we kept coming back to one key message: foods gives us an insight into the culture and history of a place. Food was our guide, helping us explore and unearth the hidden stories of the city. We rounded off the tour with a traditional dinner of lamb skewers cooked on a charcoal grill. As we bit into the succulent, juicy chunks of spiced meat, we could think back through our discoveries of the day and realize the power of a good meal.

Day 4: Cooking Up Regional Dishes with a Local Chef

Tastes of the Region

Today the group spent the glorious morning at a family-run restaurant spanning generations. Our local chef and host was more than gracious and eager to share what made their food so special. Minutes later, she had us all in the kitchen, preparing some traditional recipes of the region.

  • The first dish was a staple in many households: tomato-based vegetarian chili. After chopping and dicing some peppers and vegetables, it was off to the stovetop.
  • The aroma of the simmering chili lingered in the air, as we moved on to creating a unique seafood dish: the ceviche. The chef had just brought in a fresh catch of fish and after filleting it, we marinated it in some lime and chilli.
  • With the chili and ceviche simmering away, we moved on to the main course: a home-style pork cutlet with a creamy key lime sauce. We mixed up a fragrant marinade with some herbs and spices, coating the cutlets before frying them.

The buzz was soon replaced with the grin of satisfaction as we tucked into the final dish. The mix of zesty, savoury and creamy notes was like nothing we had tasted before. We were now more familiar with the cuisine of the region, having got a taste of it up close with our local chef.
